Kalona and David’s Palace of Fine Arts engagement session was light, joyful, and fun–three of my favorite things–and it was a gorgeous day with wonderful light. In essence, it was a photographer’s dream, although it was a busy day and a lot of people had the same idea! (We had to strategically position ourselves so we avoided all of the other people milling about. We also noticed several other photo shoots happening, including an Indian bride and groom, a Western bride in an enormous pouffy dress, a Quincenera, and a family all dressed up for their holiday card photo). The couple chose the iconic building as the setting for their San Francisco engagement photos because it held special meaning for them: they spent a magical evening (think a moonlight stroll) there in the early days of their relationship. David is an architect, so the location held a lot of appeal in that respect as well.
Kalona says she is the serious one, while David loves to joke. There wasn’t any seriousness during their engagement session, however, and David did make her laugh a lot. It’s always inspiring to see couples having fun together and the love that David and Kalona share is palpable.
Speaking of fun, not long after we began taking shooting their engagement photos, music started pumping and a flash mob all dressed in white suddenly appeared and took center stage under the dome. After performing they snapped off a bunch of group shots rapid fire, then the group disappeared as quickly and mysteriously as they had arrived.
At one point David and Kalona were dancing under the central dome and he started to gently dip her. She wasn’t as certain about the move. “Don’t worry,” he assured her, “I’m not going to plié and lift you over my head or anything.” Amazed, I asked him how he knew what a plié was (it’s not a word you hear everyday, and ballet was my first career). He told me, “I grew up with a single mother who felt it was important to go to the symphony, the opera, and the ballet, so we went to the symphony, the opera, and the ballet.” (For the record, I’m totally looking forward to meeting his mom at the wedding).
After we finished their engagement photos in their more formal attire, the two changed into Warriors jerseys…The team is another love David and Kalona share. They decided to be a bit adventurous and climb up for a different perspective. A Palace of Fine Arts engagement session wouldn’t be complete without taking advantage of the many stairs that decorate the building….even if it is breaking the rules a bit. They especially loved all of the carved detail on the ceiling of the dome.
The most adventurous shot from David and Kalona’s Palace of Fine Arts engagement session happened in our final moments together. The pair climbed up to the as high as they could so they could get a shot with the ceiling details of the dome as their backdrop. Seeing this couple have this much fun together, I can tell there are great things in store for them in their future together!
