Your wedding day nightmare has come true: it’s so hot outside the caterers could cook your meal on the sidewalk and you’re worried your guest might melt… here’s how to help your guests stay cool at your summer wedding, and keep your cool while you’re at it!
Stash a cute hand-held fan under every seat before your guests arrive, and leave a basket out near your gift table. Whether you purchase fabric, wood, or cardboard fans, there are some sweet choices out there! Choose fans that coordinate with your color or style theme, like shell-colored pale pastels for beach weddings, or a bamboo texture or print for an Asian-themed wedding. Make sure you also keep their butts cool by using cushions on the chairs.
2. Keep your guests hydrated.
Hydration is one of the primary concerns when the temperature rises. Instead of serving alcohol when guests arrive, put a glass of sparkling water, flavor-infused still water, or juice in their hands. Even slight dehydration can cause older guests to feel confused or dizzy. You want your guests to stay cool at your summer wedding, so make sure you have plentiful cool drinks available. Better yet, serve chilled water flavored with some of the fruits listed below.
3. Best foods to stay cool at your summer wedding
When it comes to high heat, not all foods are created equal. Choose specific foods that will help everyone stay cool at your summer wedding. Here’s a list to get you started:
Melons. Made of 90 percent water, melon replaces glycogen stores quickly, says David Grotto, RDN, author of The Best Things You Can Eat.
Blueberries. These little gems pack a whopping 92 percent water. That’s hard to beat!
Sweet peppers. At 92 percent water, these are one of the most hydrating vegetables you can serve. Simply chop and add a dip and they’re set.
Watermelon. “Watermelon’s high water content keeps you cool and hydrated,” says Boston-based registered dietitian Janel Funk, MS, RD, LDN, who runs the website Eat Well With Janel. “Watermelon also contains lycopene, which protects skin cells from sun damage,” says Funk.
Salad. Iceberg lettuce has the highest water content, but other varieties are nearly as aqueous with better nutritional value.
4. Hairties are helpful.
A girl’s best friend during the summertime is truly a hair tie. For outdoor moments, whether it’s for the ceremony or cocktail hour, have hair ties nearby for the women who want to go with a quick and temporary updo.
5. Create DIY Mister Bottles
You probably don’t want to get married at a water park (although some do!) but you can keep guests cool and refreshed with a little ingenuity by creating DIY mini water misters. Purchase mini mister bottles and print labels for each bottle so guests know when and how to use it. Place one under each chair during the reception.
It goes without saying that you’ll want to create as much shade as possible. Market umbrellas, parachutes, and Inspired by This says parasols are also a great choice. Though the day might be scorching, you can stay cool at your summer wedding. Put these tips into action and make it a day to remember!
